The Sphinx's Secret Riddle

Luna was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice and napped in sunbeams, Luna chased dreams and napped on clouds. One night, she climbed to the very top of the highest hill, where an ancient sphinx had sat for a thousand years, guarding secrets older than the stars.

The sphinx had the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. Her stone eyes sparkled like captured moonlight.

"Little cat," the sphinx rumbled, her voice sounding like wind through hollow caves. "I have been waiting for someone brave enough to answer my riddle."

Luna's whiskers trembled with excitement. "I'm not afraid!"

"Then listen well," said the sphinx. "In the valley below lives a great bull who has forgotten how to dance. His heavy hooves have trampled the flowers, and his sorrow has dried up the river. Only water flowing from a pure heart can make the river sing again. But the bull is too proud to ask for help."

Luna's ears perked up. "I know someone who needs help!"

"Indeed," the sphinx continued. "But here is my riddle: What is small enough to hold in your paw yet big enough to fill a whole heart?"

Luna thought and thought. She watched dewdrops sparkle on the sphinx's stone wings. She remembered how her owner's laugh felt warm like sunshine. She thought about how a tiny purr could make someone feel better after a terrible day.

"Kindness!" Luna meowed. "Small kindnesses are like little drops of water — they add up to something big!"

The sphinx smiled, and stone cracked away to reveal a beautiful woman made of starlight. "You have answered wisely, little one." She pressed a silver tear from her cheek into Luna's paw. "This will become water when it touches the bull's heart."

Luna raced down the hill. The great bull lay in the dusty riverbed, his great horns drooping. Luna approached softly, her purr rumbling like a tiny motor. She rubbed against his giant nose, leaving the silver tear there.

The bull's eyes widened. Water trickled from the silver drop, then flowed in streams, then rushed like magic. Flowers burst from the ground. The bull stood up, and to everyone's surprise, he began to dance — great clumsy leaps that made the earth shake with joy.

From that day on, Luna, the sphinx, and the dancing bull gathered every full moon. And the river never stopped flowing, because sometimes the smallest creatures hold the biggest magic of all.
