The Sphinx's Secret Riddle
Lily loved exploring the beach near her grandmother's cottage. Every morning, she would put on her favorite yellow sun hat and run toward the sparkling blue water. But today was different.
As Lily walked past the tall palm trees that dotted the sandy shore, she noticed something peculiar. A small creature sat perched on a smooth rock—it looked like a tiny sphinx, no bigger than a seashell, with golden fur and wise amber eyes.
"Greetings," said the sphinx in a voice like chiming bells. "I've been waiting for someone with a brave heart."
Lily's curly hair bounced as she nodded. "I'm Lily. Who are you?"
"I am Cleo, guardian of the ocean's memories," the sphinx replied. "For one hundred years, I've needed help returning a lost treasure to the sea. Are you brave enough to help me?"
Lily's heart beat fast, but she stood tall. "Yes!"
Cleo led her to a tide pool where something sparkled in the shallow water. It was a beautiful pearl, glowing with soft rainbow light.
"This pearl belongs to the mermaids," Cleo explained. "But I cannot touch water—it makes me disappear! You must return it."
Lily knelt beside the pool. The water was cool against her fingers as she reached for the pearl. The moment she picked it up, the ocean seemed to hum. She tossed it gently into a wave.
Suddenly, the water sparkled with tiny lights. A mermaid's face appeared in the foam. "Thank you, brave child!"
Lily turned to thank Cleo, but the little sphinx was fading away like mist at sunrise.
"You've restored magic to the ocean," Cleo whispered. "Remember: true courage isn't about not being scared. It's about helping others even when you ARE scared."
Lily's hat blew off in the sea breeze, but she didn't mind. She ran home, eager to tell her grandmother about the magical sphinx and how helping others was the bravest thing anyone could do.
From that day on, whenever Lily visited the beach, she left small gifts by the palm tree—shells, flowers, and stones. And sometimes, if she was very quiet, she could hear tiny bells chiming in the breeze.
