The Sphinx's Secret Riddle

Lily loved spending summer days at Crystal Lake with her golden retriever, Barnaby. The water sparkled like diamonds under the sun, and Barnaby would splash happily, chasing after sticks that Lily threw far into the blue depths. Swimming was their favorite adventure together.

One hot afternoon, while exploring a hidden cove they'd never noticed before, Lily and Barnaby discovered something extraordinary. Behind a curtain of willow branches stood an ancient stone sphinx, half lion and half human, with wise eyes that seemed to twinkle.

"Hello, young friend," the sphinx spoke, her voice like wind chimes. "I have been waiting for someone pure of heart to solve my riddle."

Lily's eyes widened. The sphinx explained that long ago, a greedy sorcerer had trapped the magic of Crystal Lake in a crystal, hiding it somewhere mysterious. Only someone who could answer her riddle could find it and restore the lake's magic.

"I accept your challenge!" Lily said bravely.

The sphinx smiled. "What has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"

Lily thought hard. She remembered this riddle from one of her favorite storybooks. "A person!" she exclaimed. "Babies crawl on four legs, grown-ups walk on two, and elderly people use a cane for three!"

The sphinx nodded wisely. "Correct! Your wisdom shall be rewarded."

With a wave of her paw, the sphinx made the water glow with rainbow colors. Hidden beneath the lake's surface appeared a beautiful crystal shell. Inside pulsed the magic of Crystal Lake.

"Take it," said the sphinx. "You and your loyal dog have shown courage and cleverness. The magic is yours to protect."

Lily gently placed the crystal shell around Barnaby's neck, where it caught the sunlight and scattered sparkles across the water. From that day on, Crystal Lake became even more magical—the water always felt warm, fish would swim alongside them like playful companions, and sometimes, if they looked closely, they could see the sphinx smiling from the shore.

Lily learned that true friendship, like the magic of the lake, becomes more powerful when shared with those you love. And every swimming adventure with Barnaby became a reminder of the day a little girl and her dog became the keepers of Crystal Lake's wonder.
