The Sphinx's Secret Riddle
Lily loved exploring the woods behind her grandmother's cottage. One afternoon, she followed a sparkling blue stream deeper into the forest than she'd ever gone before. The water rushed over smooth stones, singing a cheerful song that made Lily want to dance.
Around a bend, she gasped. There, half-hidden by weeping willow branches, sat an ancient stone sphinx. Its lion body rested on the grassy bank, while its wise eagle wings were folded at its sides. The sphinx's face looked kind, not scary at all.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke, and Lily almost jumped out of her skin. "I've been waiting three hundred years for someone brave enough to find me."
Lily's heart raced, but she stood tall. "I'm Lily. What do you need?"
"My friend Ferdinand—a gentle bull who loves poetry—has lost his courage," the sphinx explained sadly. "He's too afraid to cross the stream to reach the meadow full of his favorite flowers. I cannot help him, for I am made of stone and cannot swim. But you..."
Lily followed the sphinx's gaze. On the far bank stood a magnificent bull with golden-brown fur and the softest brown eyes. He looked nervous, pawing at the ground.
"I can help!" Lily cried. She knelt by the water's edge and noticed the stepping stones barely visible beneath the surface. "Ferdinand! Look! There are stones you can walk on."
The bull stepped carefully, placing each hoof with precision. Lily guided him with encouraging words. "You're doing great! Almost there!"
When Ferdinand reached the other side, he danced joyfully in the flower meadow. The sphinx smiled, and her stone wings shimmered with golden light.
"Thank you, Lily," the sphinx said. "True courage isn't about never being afraid. It's about having friends who believe in you."
Lily returned to her grandmother's cottage with a pocketful of wildflowers and a heart full of magic. She realized that helping others was the greatest adventure of all.
