The Sphinx's Secret Pool Party
Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching her **vitamin** D supplement like a lifeline. Summer swim team tryouts were tomorrow, and she'd been taking the pills religiously after reading somewhere they helped with energy levels. Not that she needed more anxiety-induced energy.
The social **pyramid** of Roosevelt High was on full display at Jessica's end-of-year blowout. The popular kids lounged on the upper deck with their fancy iced coffees, while the rest of us splashed around in the shallow end like awkward penguins. Maya had spent three years trying to climb that pyramid, but today she was over it.
"Maya! Finally!" Lena waved from the water, her neon pink swimsuit practically glowing underwater. "Get in here!"
She hesitated. The deep end called to her—both literally and figuratively. Taking a deep breath, she dove in.
**Swimming** had always been her escape, but something felt different today. Maybe it was the way Jason kept looking at her from the diving board, or how Lena's friend group had suddenly become inclusive after three years of being practically invisible.
"Hey, have you seen Sphinx?" Lena asked, paddling over.
"Sphinx?"
"Jessica's cat. Egyptian rescue, super mysterious. She disappeared like an hour ago."
Maya rolled her eyes. Of course Jessica had an exotic cat with a mythological name. "Probably hiding from all this chaos."
"No, like, actually missing." Lena's eyes widened. "Jessica's freaking out. We should search."
So Maya found herself sneaking around the side of the house with Lena and—surprisingly—Jason, looking for a cat named Sphinx while dripping pool water everywhere. The unexpected ally caught her off guard.
"So, tryouts tomorrow?" Jason asked, sounding genuinely interested.
"Yeah. Nervous as hell."
"You'll kill it. I've seen you practice." His casual compliment made her heart do this weird fluttery thing.
They found Sphinx hiding behind the garden shed, looking entirely unimpressed with the whole situation. But something else happened too—Maya realized she'd been hanging out with the wrong people. Lena was hilarious. Jason was actually sweet. And maybe the social pyramid wasn't worth climbing anyway.
Later, floating on her back and staring at the stars, Maya realized the real vitamins weren't in pill form. They were moments like this—new friends, unexpected connections, and the courage to dive into the deep end even when you couldn't see the bottom.
