The Sphinx's Secret Pool Friend

Leo loved swimming at the community pool. The water always sparkled like diamonds under the sun, and the air smelled of chlorine and summer. But one Tuesday evening, when everyone else had gone home, he saw something amazing.

A golden sphinx sat on the edge of the pool! She had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman, with wings folded at her sides like a sleeping bird.

"Hello, Leo," she said softly. "I've been waiting for someone kind like you."

"How do you know my name?" Leo asked, eyes wide.

"I know many things," the sphinx smiled. "But I cannot help my friend. Will you?"

Leo nodded eagerly.

She pointed across the shimmering water to where a small waterfall cascaded into the pool. "My friend Zara is trapped behind that waterfall. She cannot swim across, and neither can I. The magic water pushes us back."

"Who's Zara?" Leo asked.

"A zombie," said the sphinx. "But not a scary one. Zara is kind and lonely. Everyone runs away because she looks different — green skin, stitches, patchy clothes. But she tells the best stories and gives the warmest hugs."

Leo looked around and spotted the thick coiled cable used to clean the pool. It was bright yellow and strong. "Maybe this could help!"

The sphinx's eyes sparkled like stars. "Clever child!"

Leo tied one end of the cable to the diving board. "Grab on, Zara!" he called, tossing the other end across the pool.

A green figure with patchy clothes and wild hair caught the cable. Zara pulled herself across, hand over hand, until she reached the side. She didn't look scary at all — just different, like a puzzle piece that hadn't found its place yet.

"Thank you," Zara said shyly, giving a little wave.

The sphinx and Zara hugged, and Zara's skin seemed to glow a little brighter. "Now we can play together again!" Zara cheered.

"You know," Leo said, "my friends are coming tomorrow for swimming lessons. Would you like to meet them? They're brave like me."

Zara's eyes lit up. "Really? They won't run away?"

"Really," Leo smiled. "Friends don't judge by how you look. They care about your heart."

And so the pool became a magical place where sphinx, zombie, and children splished and splashed together, proving that friendship can bridge any divide — even ones that seem impossible at first.
