The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice and napped in sunbeams, Mittens dreamed of adventures. One afternoon, while exploring beyond her garden, she discovered something magical—a shimmering blue pool hidden among ancient trees.
But this was no ordinary pool. Guarding it sat a magnificent sphinx with emerald eyes and golden wings. "Welcome, little traveler," the sphinx purred. "Few discover the Pool of Wishes."
Mittens's fur stood up with excitement. "What does it do?"
"It shows you what you truly need," the sphinx explained. "Not what you want, but what your heart requires."
As Mittens peered into the water, images appeared—a lonely bear sitting in a cave, looking sad and hungry. Suddenly, the bear looked up, as if sensing someone was thinking of him.
"That's Barnaby!" Mittens exclaimed. "I've seen him in the forest, but I was always too scared to say hello."
"Perhaps," the sphinx said wisely, "friendship is waiting on the other side of fear."
Gathering her courage, Mittens dashed into the forest. She found Barnaby exactly as the pool had shown him—alone in his cave. His tummy rumbled loudly.
"H-hello?" Mittens meowed timidly. "I brought you something."
She had grabbed a ripe papaya from her garden on the way. Barnaby's eyes widened. No one had ever brought him a gift before.
"For me?" the bear asked, his voice deep and gentle.
"Yes!" Mittens pushed the papaya forward. "I'm Mittens."
"I'm Barnaby." He took a careful bite and smiled. "This is the sweetest thing I've ever tasted. Almost as sweet as making a new friend."
They spent the afternoon playing hide-and-seek among the trees. When Mittens returned to the sphinx's pool at sunset, she saw her reflection—but now it showed two friends together.
"The pool was right," Mittens told the sphinx. "I didn't know I needed a friend until I found one."
"And that," the sphinx replied, "is the greatest magic of all."
From that day on, Mittens and Barnaby were inseparable. And sometimes, they'd visit the pool together, watching as it reflected not just their faces, but the beautiful friendship they'd both found by being brave enough to say hello.
