The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily had always been curious about the old stone statue behind her grandmother's garden. It was a small sphinx with lion paws and a mysterious smiling face. One hot summer afternoon, while eating a sweet orange papaya, Lily noticed something strange—the sphinx seemed to wink at her!
"Did you just wink?" Lily asked, wiping sticky papaya juice from her chin.
The sphinx's stone mouth curled into a bigger smile. "I've been waiting for someone to share that papaya with me," said a rumbly voice like rocks clicking together.
Lily gasped but wasn't scared. She held out her fruit. The sphinx took a tiny piece and swallowed it whole. "Delicious! Now I'll show you my secret."
The ground beneath the sphinx began to glow. Slowly, a hidden trapdoor slid open, revealing stairs spiraling down into darkness. Lily's heart beat fast, but something told her this was an adventure worth having.
At the bottom, she gasped. A crystal-clear pool sparkled under tiny floating lights that looked like captured stars. The water wasn't just water—it swirled with rainbow colors that changed when she smiled.
"This is the Pool of True Wishes," the sphinx explained, climbing down beside her. "But there's a secret: it only shows wishes that help others."
Lily peered into the magical water. At first, she saw herself with a giant room full of toys. But when she looked closer, the image changed. She saw her friend Maya, whose family couldn't afford new school supplies. Maya was using broken crayons and tattered notebooks.
"I wish Maya could have new art supplies," Lily whispered.
The pool's colors swirled faster. The next day, a mysterious package appeared on Maya's doorstep—filled with everything an artist could dream of.
Lily visited the sphinx many times that summer. She learned that the best wishes weren't the ones for herself, but the ones that made others smile. And sometimes, she'd bring papaya slices for her magical friend, who always said the sweetest fruit tasted even sweeter when shared with someone special.
The sphinx had been right all along. The most magical pool wasn't the one with rainbow water—it was the one in Lily's heart, filled with wishes for everyone but herself.
