The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, especially on hot summer days. Behind the old oak tree, she discovered something magical—a stone statue of a sphinx with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. The sphinx had emerald eyes that seemed to sparkle in the sunlight.
Buster, Lily's golden retriever, wagged his tail and sniffed at the statue's paw.
"Hello there," a voice rumbled. Lily jumped! The sphinx's stone lips had moved!
"I am Cleo, Guardian of the Dream Pool," the sphinx said. "Only those with pure hearts may enter."
The ground rumbled, and a beautiful blue pool appeared. It wasn't just any pool—its water shimmered with rainbow colors.
Suddenly, a green figure rose from the water. Lily gasped. It looked like a zombie!
"Don't be afraid!" the zombie called out. He had messy blue hair, patched clothes, and the kindest smile Lily had ever seen. "I'm Zedd! I'm not scary—I'm magical! This pool turned me funny-looking, but inside, I'm just a regular kid who loved swimming too much."
Zedd explained that he'd been swimming in the magical pool for a hundred years. Now he was its guardian, making sure no one used it for bad wishes.
"Can you ever leave?" Lily asked.
"Only when someone learns the pool's secret," Zedd said sadly. "The water grants wishes, but only wishes that help others."
Lily thought hard. She didn't wish for toys or candy. She didn't wish to be rich or famous.
"I wish," Lily said, "that Zedd could go home to his family."
The pool glowed golden! Zedd's green skin faded to a healthy brown. His patchy clothes transformed into a bright red swimsuit.
"Thank you!" Zedd cheered. "You learned the secret—kindness is the greatest magic of all!"
The sphinx nodded approvingly. Buster barked happily as Zedd disappeared in a spark of light, finally going home.
Lily visited the sphinx every summer after that. She never made another wish, because she already had everything she needed—a magical friend, a wonderful dog, and the knowledge that kindness was the best magic of all.
