The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily had the curliest, bounciest hair in the whole world. It bounced when she walked, bounced when she ran, and even bounced when she tried to sneak. Her hair was like a cloud of golden springs that refused to stay still.

One summer afternoon, while playing in her grandmother's garden, Lily noticed something strange. Behind the old rose bushes, where no one ever went, shimmered a pool of water that seemed to glow with blue light. And sitting beside it was the most incredible creature she had ever seen.

It was a sphinx—a magical lion with the head of a wise person, enormous feathery wings folded at its sides, and eyes that sparkled like tiny stars.

Lily ducked behind a tree. She became a spy, watching quietly, barely breathing. The sphinx dipped its paw into the pool, and ripples of color spread across the water—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Like a rainbow had melted into the pool.

"I know you're there, little one," the sphinx said gently. "Your bouncing hair gave you away."

Lily stepped out slowly. "You can see me?"

The sphinx smiled. "I see many things. This is the Truth Pool. It shows what's in people's hearts. Would you like to see?"

Lily nodded and crept closer. The sphinx touched her paw to the water's surface, and the pool changed. Lily saw herself—not as she was, but as she could be: brave, kind, standing up for others, helping friends. She saw herself growing up to be someone who made the world better.

"Your hair may bounce," the sphinx said softly, "but your heart bounces even more—with curiosity, with kindness, with courage. Never let anyone make you feel small because you're different. Your uniqueness is your greatest gift."

Lily smiled, touching her wild curls. "Will you be here tomorrow?"

"I'll be here," said the sphinx, "whenever you need to remember the truth inside you."

And every day that summer, Lily visited her secret friend by the magical pool, learning that the best thing about being different was being exactly, wonderfully herself.
