The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily discovered the secret pool on the hottest day of summer. It was hidden behind a wall of ivy in her grandmother's garden, shimmering like liquid sapphires. But the most amazing surprise was what sat beside it.
A sphinx. A real one!
He had golden fur, emerald eyes that twinkled like stars, and wings that folded neatly against his sides. But he looked sad.
"Hello," Lily whispered.
The sphinx sighed. "Hello, little human. I am Orion, guardian of the Wishing Pool. But I have failed my duty."
"What happened?"
"I need the golden vitamin from the sun's first ray to keep my magic strong," Orion explained. "But I cannot leave this pool to find it. Without it, I will turn to stone forever."
Lily gasped. "But we're friends now! Friends help each other!"
She pulled out her iPhone. Her mom had said it could do amazing things, but she'd never imagined using it for magic.
"What are you doing?" Orion asked.
"The sunrise is coming! I'll take a picture of the first ray, and maybe we can catch the golden vitamin!"
They waited together as the sky turned pink and gold. The moment the first sunbeam touched the water, Lily snapped a picture.
Something magical happened. The phone glowed, and a tiny golden light floated out of it—the golden vitamin!
Orion caught it in his paw. His fur began to shine brighter than ever. "You did it! You saved me!"
The pool bubbled and sparkled, showing Lily visions of happy memories—her birthday, her dog, her family.
"Make a wish, friend," Orion said.
Lily wished for something wonderful. "I wish that everyone could have a friend as amazing as you."
Orion purred. "That wish is already granted, because you have me. And I have you."
Every summer after that, Lily visited the secret pool. She learned that the best magic isn't in phones or vitamins or even magical creatures. The best magic is friendship—and that's a treasure that lasts forever.
