The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily was practicing her spy moves in the backyard when she spotted something peculiar behind the old oak tree. A golden stone sphinx was sitting beside a shimmering blue pool that hadn't been there yesterday!
"I must be dreaming," Lily whispered. But her dog Buster bounded toward the pool, barking happily. Her cat Whiskers followed, her tail twitching with curiosity.
The sphinx's eyes opened, glowing like amber jewels. "Welcome, young seeker," she rumbled in a voice like distant thunder. "This is the Pool of Truth. Only those with pure hearts may enter."
Lily had read about sphinxes in her storybook. They were wise guardians who asked riddles! "I'm Lily, and this is Buster and Whiskers," she said bravely.
"I am Cleo," the sphinx replied. "Will you solve my riddle and swim in my magical pool?"
Lily nodded. "Yes!"
"I have four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. She had learned this riddle in school! "A human! Babies crawl on four legs, grown-ups walk on two, and elderly people use walking sticks!"
"Correct!" Cleo's stone face smiled. The pool's water sparkled like diamonds. "Jump in!"
Lily, Buster, and Whiskers splashed into the warm water. Suddenly, they could see each other's thoughts! Buster was thinking about treats. Whiskers was planning to nap. And Lily—Lily was thinking about how much she loved her adventures.
"True friends understand each other without speaking," Cleo said. "You three share a special bond. Remember this: the best spy doesn't spy on others—she spies for adventure, to discover wonder and protect her friends."
The sphinx touched Lily's forehead with a stone paw. A small golden mark appeared. "This will remind you of our meeting."
When Lily blinked, the sphinx and pool were gone. But the golden mark remained, and somehow, Buster and Whiskers seemed to understand her better than ever.
That night, Lily wrote in her diary: "Today I learned that magic is real, friendship is the greatest treasure, and the best adventures happen when you're curious."
