The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily discovered the hidden pool behind the old oak tree on a Tuesday afternoon. The water shimmered with colors that changed every time she blinked—blue, then green, then purple.
"Hello there," a riddle-voice purred. Lily looked up. A stone sphinx sat beside the pool, its lion body golden in the sunlight, its human face wise and kind. "I am the Guardian of Wishes. But first, you must answer my puzzle."
Lily's knees knocked together, but she stood tall. "I'm ready."
"What has no feet but dances, no voice but sings, and no hands but gives?" The sphinx's eyes sparkled.
Lily thought hard. Then she smiled. "The wind!"
"Correct!" The sphinx bowed its stone head. "You may make one wish. But choose wisely—the pool shows truth, not tricks."
Before Lily could speak, the ground rumbled. A bull charged through the trees! But wait—this was no ordinary bull. His fur was rainbow-colored, and he wore a tiny red cape. He skidded to a stop, panting.
"Please, help!" The bull spoke in a deep, gentle voice. "My best friend is in trouble!"
"Who's your friend?" Lily asked.
"Zoe, the zombie." The bull's eyes filled with tears. "She's not scary—she's just lonely. Everyone runs away because she looks different. She lives in the cave behind the waterfall, and I haven't seen her for three days."
Lily looked at the sphinx. "I wish to help Zoe!"
The pool's water swirled and showed an image: Zoe, a green-skinned girl with stitch-smiles, stuck in a thorny patch. She was crying.
"The pool shows us the way," said the sphinx. "True friends see hearts, not appearances."
Lily, the bull, and even the sphinx (who could float!) rushed to help. When they found Zoe, Lily didn't run away. She reached through the thorns and took Zoe's hand.
"I'm Lily. Will you be my friend?"
Zoe's stitched smile widened. "Really? Even though I'm a zombie?"
"Especially because you're you," Lily said.
The bull cheered, and the sphinx nodded approval. From that day on, the most unusual group played together every day—a girl, a zombie, a rainbow bull, and a wise sphinx.
And the magic pool's real secret? It wasn't the wishes. It was bringing together hearts that might never have found each other otherwise.
Because the best magic of all is friendship.
