The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily pressed her eye to the rusty fence, the best *spy* in her whole neighborhood. Behind the abandoned water park, something glittered in the moonlight. She'd promised her brother she wouldn't explore alone, but curiosity bubbled like soda in her chest.
She slipped through a gap in the fence and followed the sparkle to the old *pool*. But it wasn't empty anymore. Crystal-clear water filled it, and floating in the center was the most magnificent creature Lily had ever seen—a golden *sphinx* with emerald eyes and wings like stained glass.
"You found me," the sphinx purred, her voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough."
Lily's knees knocked together. "Who are you?"
"I'm Seraphina, guardian of magical dreams. But I'm in trouble." Seraphina's whiskers drooped. "My friends—the moon zombies—need help. They're not scary zombies. They're just... very sleepy magical creatures who forgot to take their dream *vitamin*.
Lily gasped. "You mean vitamins make magic work better?"
"Exactly!" Seraphina's wings shimmered. "The moon zombies forgot theirs, and now they're stuck halfway between awake and asleep. They're bumping into clouds and dropping stars everywhere."
Lily's heart pounded. "What can I do?"
"Be my friend spy," Seraphina said. "Climb on my back, and we'll fly to the moon castle. You're small enough to sneak the vitamins to them while they nap."
Lily scrambled onto Seraphina's back, holding tight to golden fur. They soared through the night sky, past constellations that winked hello. At the moon castle, dozens of fluffy, glowing zombies snoozed on silver clouds. They looked like friendly marshmallows.
One by one, Lily tiptoed to each sleepy creature and popped a shimmering vitamin into their open mouths. Each vitamin sparkled like pixie dust.
The first zombie stretched and yawned, its fur turning from dull gray to brilliant rainbow colors. "Thank you!" it cheered, floating up to fix the fallen stars. "We're dream guardians again!"
Soon all the moon zombies were awake and magical, dancing among the stars and painting the sky with northern lights.
Seraphina nuzzled Lily's cheek. "You saved magic tonight, little spy. Whenever you need a friend, just look at the moon. We're watching."
Lily flew back to her bed just as the sun began to rise. She tucked her adventure in her heart like a secret treasure. Some things, she learned, are more wonderful than anyone could imagine—all you have to do is be brave enough to believe.
