The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved her backyard. But her favorite spot was the old stone pool behind the garden shed. It was small and round, covered in leaves most of the time. But on hot summer days, something magical happened.

One afternoon, Lily pushed aside the leaves and peered into the water. The pool shimmered like liquid diamonds. In its reflection, she saw something amazing—a golden creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise person.

"A sphinx!" she gasped.

The sphinx climbed out of the water and shook itself dry. Water droplets sparkled like tiny stars. "I am Cleo," the sphinx said kindly. "I guard this magical pool. But I have a problem."

Lily's curly hair bounced as she leaned closer. "What kind of problem?"

Cleo sighed. "This pool shows you your true self. But every time I look in, I see the same thing—a serious sphinx who never has fun. My fur is always perfect. My whiskers never wiggle. I'm too serious!"

Lily giggled. "That's not so bad!"

"But I want to be like you," Cleo said, nodding at Lily's wild hair. "Your hair has adventures. It flies in the wind. It gets messy when you play. It's FREE!"

Lily thought for a moment. "I have an idea!" She jumped into the pool with a splash.

Cleo's eyes went wide. "What are you doing?"

"Come on!" Lily called. "Be free with me!"

The sphinx hesitated, then jumped in too. SPLASH! Water flew everywhere. Cleo's golden fur got soaked. Her whiskers wiggled. She laughed—a deep, rumbly laugh that made the pool water dance.

"I'm doing it!" Cleo cheered. "I'm being silly!"

They played until sunset, splashing and laughing. When Cleo looked in the pool again, she saw something different—a happy sphinx who knew how to have fun.

"Thank you, Lily," Cleo said. "You taught me that being serious isn't everything. Sometimes you just need to make a splash!"

Lily smiled, wringing out her soggy hair. "And you taught me that even magical creatures need to play sometimes."

From that day on, whenever Lily visited the pool, she and Cleo would splash and play together. And the sphinx's fur was never perfect again—but that was exactly how Cleo liked it.
