The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved swimming. Every summer day, she would leap into her backyard pool, splashing and diving until her toes turned wrinkly. But today was different.
When Lily opened the back door, she gasped. A tiny golden sphinx no bigger than a kitten sat on the pool's edge, its stone wings shimmering in the sunlight.
"Greetings, swimmer," the sphinx purred. "I am Cleo, guardian of the magical pool. But something is wrong. The water has lost its sparkle."
Lily peered into the pool. The usually sparkling blue water looked dull and gray.
"What happened?" she asked.
Cleo sighed. "The pool needs a special ingredient. A secret vitamin. But I've forgotten what it is. Can you help me remember?"
Lily thought hard. "Is it orange juice? Or spinach? My mom says vitamins make you strong."
Cleo shook her tiny lion head. "Those are good, but not the right kind. This vitamin must come from your heart."
Lily closed her eyes. What comes from the heart? Love? Joy? Hope? Then she remembered how happy she felt when she helped others.
"Is it... kindness?" Lily whispered.
Cleo's wings fluttered. "Yes! But kindness needs a helper. What makes kindness grow?"
Lily thought about her best friend, how they laughed and shared secrets. "Friendship!"
"Exactly!" Cleo purred. "The secret vitamin is V-I-T-A-L—I-N. Vital-in! Vital moments IN friendship. That's what makes the pool magical."
Lily smiled. She thought of all her friends who loved swimming too. She wished they could all swim together in this magical pool.
Suddenly, the water began to glow. Sparkles danced across the surface like tiny stars. The pool transformed from gray to the most brilliant blue Lily had ever seen.
"You did it!" Cleo cheered. "Your wish for friendship was the vital ingredient. Now, make another wish—this time for someone else."
Lily thought of her little brother who was afraid of water. "I wish Timmy could love swimming as much as I do."
The pool sparkled even brighter.
Cleo smiled. "Your wish is pure. Come, let's swim together. And tomorrow, bring your friends. This pool's magic grows with every friendship."
That afternoon, Lily swam with a sphinx, making shimmering rainbows in the water. She had discovered the most important lesson of all: the magic of sharing adventures with friends is the greatest vitamin of all.
