The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring the woods behind her house. One afternoon, she followed a sparkling blue butterfly deeper than she'd ever gone before. The trees grew taller and the shadows grew longer until she stumbled upon something amazing.
In a clearing stood a beautiful creature with the body of a lion and the face of a kind, wise person. A sphinx! But this wasn't like the ones in her books. This sphinx had soft golden fur and wings that shimmered like rainbows.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx said gently. "I've been waiting for someone like you."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"Of course!" The sphinx laughed, a sound like wind chimes. "My name is Aurora. Would you like to see my secret?"
Aurora led Lily to a hidden pool tucked between giant rocks. The water was the clearest Lily had ever seen, so still it looked like glass.
"This is the Pool of Dreams," Aurora explained. "The water shows you your heart's true wish. But you must share it with someone else to make it come true."
Lily peered into the pool. The water swirled with colors, and she saw herself surrounded by friends, everyone laughing and playing together. Her wish was friendship.
Aurora smiled. "That's a beautiful wish. You know, even magical creatures get lonely. I've guarded this pool for three hundred years, but I've never had someone to share it with."
Lily's heart went out to the sphinx. "You can be my friend, Aurora!"
The sphinx's wings glowed brighter than ever. "Thank you, Lily. Friendship is the greatest magic of all."
From that day on, Lily visited Aurora often. They played games by the pool, shared stories, and sometimes other children came too. The Pool of Dreams had shown Lily that wishes do come true, but not in the way she expected — she didn't just find friends, she became one.
And the water in the pool? It sparkled a little brighter whenever Lily and Aurora laughed together.
