The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved running through the golden desert near her home. Every evening, she'd race the setting sun, her feet kicking up tiny clouds of dust. Her grandmother always warned her about the ancient sphinx that guarded the hidden oasis, but Lily had never seen anything more exciting than a lizard or two.

One particularly hot afternoon, while running farther than usual, Lily spotted something magnificent. A great stone sphinx sat half-buried in the sand, its stone eyes sparkling in the sunlight. Lily approached slowly, her heart pounding with wonder.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke, its voice like wind through hollow reeds. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the sphinx rumbled mysteriously. "Behind me lies a magical pool where wishes come true. But first, you must solve my riddle."

Lily nodded eagerly.

"I have horns but cannot charge," the sphinx said. "I swim but cannot see. What am I?"

Lily thought carefully. She'd learned about desert creatures in school. "A bull shark!"

The sphinx's stone face cracked into a smile. "Clever child! You may enter." The statue moved aside, revealing a crystal pool glowing with blue light.

But something emerged from the water—a magnificent bull made entirely of starlight, with eyes like gentle moons. "I am the guardian of dreams," the bull said softly. "What wish brings you here?"

Lily thought of all the toys and treats she could wish for. But then she remembered her grandmother, who couldn't walk far anymore. "I wish for my grandmother to run through the desert with me again."

The starlight bull bowed its head. "A wish for another is the most powerful magic of all." It touched its nose to the water, and ripples of silver light spread outward.

When Lily returned home, she found her grandmother waiting at the door, standing tall and strong. "Lily!" she called. "Come running with me!"

Hand in hand, they raced across the sand under the stars. And somewhere in the distance, the sphinx watched with a smile, knowing that true magic lives in kind hearts.
