The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily pushed aside the tall bushes in her grandmother's garden and gasped. There, hidden in the dappled sunlight, was a pool so clear it looked like liquid glass. The water shimmered with colors of blue and green, like someone had spilled a rainbow across its surface.
As she stepped closer, the water began to ripple even though there was no wind. Suddenly, a face formed in the pool's reflection—not Lily's face, but the face of a sphinx with wise golden eyes and a gentle smile.
"Young one," the sphinx spoke, her voice echoing like wind through ancient temples. "I have been waiting for someone brave enough to find this hidden place. Will you help me?"
Lily's heart beat fast, but she nodded. "What do you need?"
"My friend is trapped beyond the garden wall," said the sphinx. "He needs the key to freedom. Can you guess what it is?"
Before Lily could answer, a great furry creature lumbered from the trees—a bear with soft brown fur and kind eyes. Lily wanted to run, but the bear sat down and offered her a small green leaf.
"Don't be afraid," the bear rumbled softly. "This is spinach from the magic garden. One bite will give you courage."
Lily hesitated. She had never liked spinach. But the bear looked so hopeful that she took a tiny nibble. To her surprise, it tasted sweet, like sunshine and earth and something else—something magical.
Suddenly, she understood. The sphinx's riddle wasn't about finding something new. It was about being brave enough to try something she thought she wouldn't like.
"The key," Lily said, her voice growing stronger with each word, "is courage to try new things!"
The sphinx's reflection beamed. "Exactly, dear child. Exactly."
The bear's fur began to glow, and he shrank and transformed into a beautiful butterfly with wings like autumn leaves. He fluttered around Lily's head, leaving sparkles in the air.
"Thank you," he whispered. "Your courage set me free."
Lily watched him fly over the garden wall, toward places she could only imagine. The pool returned to ordinary water, but Lily knew it was still magical. Sometimes the most wonderful discoveries come from being brave enough to take just one bite of something new.
