The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, especially the corner hidden behind thick bushes. One hot summer afternoon, she pushed through the leaves and discovered something magical — a crystal blue pool she had never seen before.

"Hello there," a riddle-voice purred.

Lily gasped. Sitting beside the water was a small golden sphinx, no bigger than a cat. It had the body of a lion, tiny wings, and a wise face with bright green eyes.

"I'm Stella!" the sphinx said. "Guardian of the Wishing Pool. What do you wish for, small human?"

Lily's eyes widened. "I wish... I wish I wasn't afraid of the deep end at swimming lessons."

Stella nodded. "Many wishes are like swimming pools. They look deep and scary, but once you jump in, you realize the water holds you up."

The sphinx extended her furry palm toward Lily. "Take my paw. Trust yourself."

Lily hesitated, then placed her small hand in Stella's warm paw. Together they stepped to the pool's edge.

"Close your eyes and jump," Stella whispered.

Lily squeezed her eyes shut, held her breath, and leaped.

Splash!

Cool water surrounded her, but it didn't feel scary. It felt like a hug. She kicked her legs and found she could float! When she opened her eyes, Stella was paddling beside her, making splashes with her paws.

"See?" Stella grinned. "You're swimming!"

Lily laughed, spinning in the magical water. "I'm doing it! I'm really doing it!"

They swam until the sun began to set, painting the sky orange and pink. Stella taught Lily to kick, to float on her back, to dive like a fish.

"Remember," Stella said as they climbed out, "bravery isn't not being afraid. Bravery is being scared and doing it anyway. That's your true magic."

Lily hugged the golden sphinx tight. "Thank you, Stella."

"Come back anytime," Stella purred. "This pool is for brave hearts."

The next day at swimming lessons, Lily's teacher was amazed. Lily jumped right into the deep end without hesitating. She knew she could do it — because a magical friend had shown her that the bravest thing is simply to believe in yourself.
