The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily discovered the hidden pool behind the old oak tree on a Tuesday afternoon. The water sparkled like diamonds, and three orange goldfish glided through the crystal depths.
"Hello there," a gentle voice rumbled.
Lily gasped. Perched on a mossy stone was a small sphinx no bigger than a cat, with soft golden fur and wise amber eyes. Unlike the scary sphinxes in her storybooks, this one smiled warmly.
"I'm Sunny," the sphinx said. "Welcome to my pool. These aren't ordinary goldfish—they're memory fish. They collect happy moments and keep them safe forever."
Lily watched the goldfish dance in circles. One swam toward her, and suddenly she saw a vision: herself building a sandcastle with her grandmother last summer. The fish held that precious memory in its shimmering scales.
"That's amazing!" Lily whispered. "But why keep them hidden?"
"Because the best memories are meant to be shared, not hoarded," Sunny explained. "Every day, children visit and swap memories. The pool grows brighter with each happy moment given away."
Lily thought of her lonely friend Tom, who had just moved to town and missed his old home. "Can I give a memory?"
The sphinx nodded. Lily closed her eyes and concentrated on the day she met her best friends. When she opened them, a tiny light floated from her hands into the water. The goldfish swam through it, and their scales glowed even brighter.
"Tomorrow," Sunny said, "Tom will visit. Your memory will help him feel less alone."
Lily skipped home, her heart full. She had learned something wonderful: happiness grows when shared, just like the ripples in the sphinx's magical pool.
