The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on hot summer afternoons. That's where she found the stone sphinx, half-hidden beneath climbing roses. The sphinx had the body of a lion, wings like an eagle, and a wise face that seemed to smile at her.
"Hello, old friend," Lily would whisper, patting its stone paw.
One day, the sphinx's eyes twinkled like stars. "Hello, Lily," it rumbled softly. "Would you like to see my secret pool?"
Lily gasped. The sphinx stood up, stone turning to golden light, and spread its wings. "Climb on my back!"
They soared into the clouds, wind rushing past like laughter. Below them, the world looked like a patchwork quilt. Then Lily saw it—a magical pool shimmering like liquid sapphire, hidden among fluffy cloud-mountains.
"This is the Pool of Wishes," the sphinx said. "But look—the storm-bull is coming!"
Dark clouds gathered. A magnificent bull made of storm clouds charged across the sky, its hooves striking like thunder drums. Lightning flashed from its horns, painting the sky purple and gold.
"He's not mean," the sphinx explained. "He's the storm-bringer! Without him, no rain would fall."
Lily watched in wonder as the lightning-bull pranced through the clouds, each strike of lightning making the magical pool glow brighter. The storm-bull paused, dipped its massive head respectfully to the sphinx, and galloped away toward distant fields.
"Make a wish, Lily," the sphinx said. "The lightning-charged pool makes the best dreams come true."
Lily thought carefully. She didn't wish for toys or candy. "I wish that everyone could have a friend as wonderful as you."
The pool bubbled with rainbow light. "Your wish is already coming true," the sphinx said, winking. "Because you're a friend to everyone you meet."
As they flew back to the garden, Lily understood—the best magic wasn't in wishes or pools or even lightning. The best magic was kindness, and she could share that everywhere she went.
From then on, every time she saw a sphinx statue, or a pool of water, or storm clouds shaped like a bull, she remembered: true friends and kind hearts are the greatest adventures of all.
