The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Emma loved rainy days, especially when lightning flashed across the sky like nature's fireworks. But this storm was different — weirdly magical.
In her backyard, an old swimming pool that had been dry for years suddenly filled with sparkling blue water. Emma ran outside in her yellow rainboots, heart pounding with excitement.
"Hello there!" a tiny voice squeaked.
Emma jumped. Perched on the pool's edge was the smallest sphinx she'd ever seen — no bigger than a kitten, with soft golden fur and tiny wings. The sphinx's mismatched eyes twinkled like stars.
"I'm Zephyr," the sphinx said. "And you've found the Lightning Pool. It only appears during the biggest storms!"
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck the water. WHOOSH! The pool began to bubble and glow.
"Watch this!" Zephyr chirped.
From the water emerged the most surprising creatures — not scary monsters, but friendly little zombie frogs! They were green and bumpy with slightly droopy eyes, but they wore tiny hats and danced to music only they could hear.
"They're not like story zombies," Zephyr explained. "They're ZOMBIE frogs — Zippy, Original, Magical, Bouncy, Incredibly Delightful Elves! They just want to play!"
Emma laughed as the zombie frogs performed silly splashing dances. One named Bubbles did a perfect backflip. Another sang a croaky song about rainbows.
The sphinx nudged Emma. "The lightning brought them to life for one hour. Want to play?"
Emma and Zephyr spent the most magical hour playing tag with the zombie frogs, having splash contests, and Zephyr even made up a lightning dance where everyone tried to pose like lightning bolts.
"Friendship is the real magic," Zephyr said wisely as the storm faded. "Not everyone gets to meet the ZOMBIE frogs."
As the last thunder rumbled away, the pool began to shimmer. The zombie frogs waved goodbye, diving deep into the water. Zephyr gave Emma's hand a tiny lick.
"Same time next storm?" the sphinx winked before disappearing in a puff of golden sparkles.
Emma ran inside, dripping wet but grinning from ear to ear. Some discoveries were too wonderful to keep secret — and the best friends sometimes come in the most surprising packages, even if they only visit during lightning storms.
