The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on hot summer days. Behind the old oak tree stood a mysterious stone statue she'd never noticed before—a sphinx with emerald eyes that seemed to twinkle.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx rumbled, and Lily jumped! "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find my secret."
The sphinx waved her paw, and suddenly the ground shimmered. A beautiful pool appeared, its water sparkling like liquid diamonds. "This is the Pool of Wishes," the sphinx explained. "But beware—magic comes with a price."
Lily leaned over the water's edge. She saw her reflection ripple and change. She saw herself flying, exploring, having adventures!
"What do you wish for?" the sphinx asked gently.
Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything—unlimited candy, a pony, or endless summer vacation. But then she noticed how dry the garden looked. The palm trees drooped, their brown fronds touching the ground.
"I wish for rain," Lily said. "Not just for me, but for everything that's thirsty."
The sphinx smiled, and her emerald eyes glowed. Suddenly, lightning flashed across the clear blue sky—purple and golden bolts that didn't scare Lily but made her gasp with wonder.
Rain began to fall, cool and sweet. But this was no ordinary rain. Each droplet sparkled with magic, and wherever it touched, flowers bloomed instantly. The palm trees perked up, their green leaves reaching toward the sky.
"You made a selfless wish," the sphinx said, opening her palm to reveal a small glowing stone. "This is your reward. Keep it, and whenever you need magic, hold it tight."
Lily took the stone, which felt warm against her skin. "Thank you! But why did you show me the pool if I couldn't make a wish just for myself?"
"Ah, but you did make a wish for yourself," the sphinx winked. "You wished to be kind, and that's the most powerful magic of all."
Lily hugged the sphinx's stone leg. "Will I see you again?"
"Whenever you visit the pool," the sphinx said as she slowly faded back into statue form. "Remember, magic lives in generous hearts."
That night, Lily fell asleep clutching her glowing stone, dreaming of sphinxes and magical pools, knowing that the real adventure was discovering how good it felt to put others first.
