The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Emma loved playing baseball in her backyard. Her golden retriever, Buster, would always chase the ball, wagging his tail so hard his whole body wiggled.

One afternoon, Emma hit the ball farther than ever before. Buster bounded after it, disappearing behind the old oak tree at the edge of their yard.

"Buster! Come back, boy!" Emma called, racing after her dog.

Behind the tree, she found something impossible—a magnificent stone sphinx with emerald eyes that sparkled like stars. The sphinx was curled around a crystal-clear pool that shimmered with rainbow light.

Buster sat beside the sphinx, tilting his head curiously. The creature spoke, its voice like wind chimes: "Young traveler, you have found my secret pool. Within swim goldfish of pure magic—each one holds a single wish."

Emma gasped. Inside the pool, dozens of golden fish glowed softly, their scales twinkling like tiny suns.

"But," the sphinx continued, "the greatest wish comes not from taking, but from giving. What would you wish for?"

Emma thought hard. She could wish for anything—endless ice cream, a castle, or to be the greatest baseball player who ever lived. Then she looked at Buster, whose golden fur matched the sphinx's eyes.

"I wish," Emma said softly, "that everyone could have a best friend as wonderful as Buster."

The sphinx smiled, and one golden fish leaped from the pool, transforming into a baseball that glowed with golden light.

"Your wish is granted," the sphinx said. "This ball will bring friendship wherever it goes. Share it, and your wish will spread."

Emma caught the magical baseball and hugged Buster. The sphinx and pool faded into sparkles, leaving only the golden ball in her hand.

That summer, Emma shared her magical baseball with every kid in the neighborhood. Buster made sure everyone felt included, even those who had never played before. And Emma learned that the best wishes are the ones we share—because friendship is the greatest magic of all.
