The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard garden. It was full of flowers, butterflies, and hidden treasures. One hot afternoon, while chasing a shiny blue dragonfly, she discovered something she had never noticed before.

Behind a giant orange tree sat a miniature pyramid made of smooth gray stones. It was no taller than her knee, but it sparkled in the sunlight as if someone had sprinkled glitter all over it. Lily knelt down and ran her fingers along the cool stones.

"Who goes there?" a gentle voice rumbled.

Lily jumped! Sitting beside the tiny pyramid was a small sphinx—the size of a kitten—with soft golden fur and wise amber eyes. Unlike the fierce sphinxes from her storybooks, this one had a friendly smile.

"I'm Lily," she whispered. "Who are you?"

"I am Orion, guardian of the secret pool," said the little sphinx. He motioned with his paw toward something Lily hadn't seen: a crystal-clear pool hidden behind orange blossoms. The water shimmered with all the colors of the rainbow.

"What makes it special?" Lily asked.

"It shows you what you need most," Orion said. "But first, you must share something precious."

Lily thought hard. In her pocket, she had a papaya she had picked from Grandma's tree—a sweet, golden fruit she had been saving for her afternoon snack. It was her favorite. But Orion looked so hopeful, and the pool was so beautiful.

Lily took out the papaya, split it in half with her fingers, and offered one piece to Orion. His eyes lit up.

"Thank you," he said, taking a bite. "Your turn. Look into the pool."

Lily leaned over the water. At first, she saw only her own reflection. Then the image changed. She saw herself playing in the garden with a friend—someone who would laugh at her jokes, share adventures, and never feel lonely. Someone just like Orion.

She looked up at the sphinx with tears in her eyes. "I don't need magic to find a friend, do I?"

Orion shook his head. "You just found one." He tapped her hand with his paw. "And you showed me that sharing makes everything sweeter—even papayas."

Lily grinned. "Will you be my friend, Orion?"

"Always," he promised.

From that day on, every afternoon after school, Lily would visit her secret friend behind the orange tree. They would share papayas, splash in the magical pool, and have adventures that no one else would ever believe. And Lily learned that the best discoveries aren't just about finding wonderful things—they're about sharing them with wonderful friends.
