The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily dreaded swimming lessons. Every Tuesday, she stood at the edge of the pool, toes curled, while other children laughed and splashed. She just couldn't make herself jump in.
One Saturday, while exploring her grandmother's attic, Lily discovered an old wooden box. Inside sat a tiny sphinx statue no bigger than her thumb, carved from smooth amber stone with emerald eyes that seemed to sparkle.
"I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me," said a tiny voice.
Lily gasped. The sphinx stretched its stone wings and yawned.
"I'm not brave," Lily whispered. "I'm afraid of everything."
"Come with me," the sphinx said, climbing onto her shoulder. "I have something to show you."
Suddenly, the attic melted away like watercolor paint in rain. Lily found herself standing beside the most beautiful pool she'd ever seen. The water shimmered with rainbow colors, and tiny stars floated on its surface like dandelion fluff.
"This is the Pool of Courage," the sphinx explained. "But to cross it, you must go swimming."
Lily's heart pounded. "I can't."
"You won't be alone."
From the pool emerged a magnificent creature—not a scary monster, but a gentle bull made entirely of water and starlight. His horns were made of crescent moons, and his eyes held galaxies.
"I am Orion," the water-bull said softly. "I will carry you across. But you must trust yourself first."
Lily looked at the sphinx, who nodded encouragingly. She stepped into the magical water. To her surprise, it felt warm, like a hug. She began kicking, paddling, and suddenly—she was swimming!
Orion swam beside her, his starlight body illuminating the depths. Tiny fish made of crystal swam around them, and Lily laughed with pure joy.
"See?" the sphinx called from the shore. "You were always brave. You just needed to believe it."
When Lily woke up in the attic, the sphinx statue was still there, winking. At her next swimming lesson, Lily jumped right in. Her teacher was amazed. But Lily knew the truth—somewhere, a water-bull with galaxy eyes was swimming beside her, and a tiny sphinx was cheering her on.
Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is simply try.
