The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved the night. While other children slept, she would creep to her window and watch the moon paint silver pictures on her backyard grass.

One Tuesday, something strange happened. The old oak tree began to glow. Lily rubbed her eyes. The light grew brighter, forming the shape of a pyramid that reached toward the stars. Her heart thumped with excitement and fear.

"Who goes there?" a voice rumbled, soft as thunder.

Lily gasped. Perched on a branch was a creature the size of a large cat—but it had the body of a lion, the head of a human, and enormous feathery wings. A sphinx!

"I'm Lily," she whispered.

The sphinx tilted her head. "I am Cleo. I guard the Moon Pyramid. Tonight is special, Lily. The Pool of Dreams appears once every hundred years. Will you help me find it?"

Lily nodded, her fear replaced by wonder.

They walked through the pyramid, which was made entirely of crystallized moonlight. Inside, stars swirled like fireflies. At the center lay a small pool, no bigger than a bathtub. But this wasn't ordinary water—it shimmered with every color Lily had ever seen.

"The Pool of Dreams shows you what your heart truly wants," Cleo explained. "But it only works if two friends look together. I've waited so long for someone to share it with."

Lily realized then that the sphinx wasn't a guard keeping people away—she was a guardian waiting for someone to join her.

They knelt side by side and gazed into the pool. Lily saw herself surrounded by friends, old and young, all laughing together. But more importantly, she saw Cleo, no longer alone, playing tag under the moonlight.

"My wish," Lily said, taking Cleo's paw, "is that you never have to wait another hundred years for a friend."

The pool sparkled brighter than ever, sending ripples of light into the sky. The pyramid faded, but Lily knew something had changed.

Every night since, Cleo visits her window. They don't need the pyramid or the pool anymore. They have something better—friendship, the most magical thing of all.

And sometimes, if you look closely at the moon, you might see two small silhouettes dancing among the stars, one girl and one sphinx, forever friends.
