The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved running through Golden Gate Park, her sneakers thumping against the winding path. One Tuesday afternoon, something magical caught her eye: a stone sphinx with emerald eyes, winking beside a sparkling pool that hadn't been there yesterday.

The sphinx stretched its stone paws and spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "Hello, young traveler. I am Sammy, and this is my wishing pool. But I've forgotten how to make wishes come true!"

Lily's eyes widened. "I can help! What do we need?"

Sammy's riddle echoed: "Something green, something leafy, something tasty and mighty. Only then will the pool grant wishes truly."

Lily's grandmother grew the best spinach in her garden. It was green, leafy, and made you strong! "I know just the thing," Lily said. "But I'll need to run fast."

The sphinx nodded gravely. "Return before sunset, or the magic fades."

Lily ran faster than she'd ever run before—past the playground, through the meadow, over the little bridge. Her heart pounded like a drum. Breathless, she grabbed a basketful of fresh spinach from Grandma's garden.

"What's the rush, sweetheart?" Grandma called.

"A sphinx needs help!" Lily shouted, already running back.

She reached the pool just as the sky turned purple. Sammy waited patiently. Lily tossed the spinach into the crystal water. It swirled and glowed, turning the pool into liquid rainbow!

"Thank you," Sammy whispered. "For your kindness and speed, you may make three wishes."

But Lily shook her head. "I don't need wishes. Helping a new friend was the best adventure."

Sammy smiled, and the pool sparkled brighter. "Then here's my gift: whenever you need magic, just run to my pool with a kind heart."

That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of stone sphinxes and magical pools, knowing some adventures are even better than wishes.
