The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring the woods behind her grandmother's house. One summer afternoon, she followed a trail of sparkling stones deeper than she'd ever gone before. The path wound through ancient trees until she reached a clearing she'd never seen.
In the center stood a magnificent sphinx carved from warm brown stone, covered in climbing vines with emerald leaves shaped like tiny **palm** fronds. The sphinx had wise eyes that seemed to twinkle in the dappled sunlight.
"Welcome, young adventurer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "I've been waiting for someone with a brave heart."
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"All things speak if you listen with your heart," the sphinx replied. "Behind me lies a magical **pool** where wishes come true. But first, you must solve my riddle."
Before Lily could answer, a massive brown **bear** lumbered into the clearing. Lily gasped and stepped back, but the bear only smiled kindly.
"Don't be afraid," said the bear gently. "I'm Barnaby. I've been coming here for fifty years. The sphinx helped me when I was just a lonely cub looking for friends."
The sphinx nodded. "Barnaby is my guardian. Now, here is my riddle: I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. She remembered the map her father had shown her. "A map!"
"Correct!" The sphinx stepped aside to reveal a crystal-clear pool shimmering with rainbow light. In its center swam a single golden **goldfish** with scales that flashed like tiny suns.
"Make your wish," whispered the goldfish, rising to the surface.
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything—to fly, to have infinite toys, to become a princess. But she looked at kind Barnaby and the wise sphinx.
"I wish that everyone who finds this place will always find a friend," Lily said.
The goldfish swam in a joyful spiral, and golden light spread through the clearing. The sphinx smiled warmly. "You have a truly magical heart, Lily. You've given yourself the greatest wish of all."
From that day on, Lily visited often, and she never felt alone again. She learned that the best wishes are the ones we make for others, and that friendship is the most powerful magic of all.
