The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially the old stone pool hidden behind the roses. It had been there for hundreds of years, filled with clear water that shimmered like liquid diamonds in the sunlight.
One hot summer afternoon, Lily knelt by the pool's edge, trailing her fingers in the cool water. Suddenly, ripples formed across the surface, though no wind blew. The water began to glow with a soft golden light.
From the center of the pool, something amazing rose up. It was a small sphinx, no bigger than a kitten, with tiny feathered wings and wise amber eyes. The creature shook itself dry like a puppy, sending droplets flying like tiny jewels.
"Greetings, young friend," the sphinx said in a voice that sounded like wind chimes. "I am Cleo, guardian of forgotten dreams. I've been sleeping in this pool for three hundred years!"
Lily's eyes grew wide. "You can talk?"
"Of course!" Cleo fluttered her wings and flew to Lily's shoulder. "Sphinxes love riddles and adventures. But I'm lonely. Will you be my friend?"
"Yes!" Lily whispered, afraid this wonderful dream might end.
Every day that summer, Lily visited the pool. Cleo taught her ancient games, shared stories from long ago, and showed her magic hidden in ordinary things — how dewdrops could become tiny crystal balls, how flowers could sing if you listened carefully.
But as summer neared its end, Cleo grew sad. "Autumn is coming. I must return to the water and sleep until spring."
Lily's heart sank. "I'll miss you."
Cleo nuzzled Lily's cheek. "True friendship never fades, silly girl. Just touch the water each morning, and remember: the most magical pools aren't filled with water — they're filled with memories of friends who care about each other."
Celo dove back into the pool with a splash that turned into hundreds of tiny butterflies.
Now, every spring when the first warm breeze blows, Lily returns to the pool. She touches the water and smiles, knowing somewhere deep below, her friend is waking up, ready for another season of magic and riddles and the best friendship anyone could ever wish for.
And sometimes, if you look very carefully, you can see tiny golden ripples dancing across the water, even when no wind is blowing at all.
