The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily's orange tabby cat, Marmalade, had always been magical. Sometimes he glowed when he purred. Sometimes he floated two inches off the ground. But one summer afternoon, when Marmalade dashed into the woods behind their house, Lily discovered just how special he really was.
She followed him past the old oak tree, through a patch of sparkling blue flowers, and into a clearing she had never seen before. In the center sat a crystal-clear pool, its surface smooth as glass. And beside it sat a sphinx — but not like in storybooks. This sphinx had the body of a golden retriever and the face of a wise old grandmother, with twinkling eyes and half-moon glasses.
"Welcome, Lily," the sphinx said warmly. "Marmalade has brought you to the Friendship Pool. It appears only to those with kind hearts."
Lily gasped. "You can talk?"
"Of course," the sphinx chuckled. "I'm the guardian of this magical place. But we have a problem. A grumpy bear named Boris has settled nearby, and he's lonely. But whenever anyone tries to befriend him, he just growls and chases them away."
Just then, a massive brown bear lumbered into the clearing. Boris looked sad despite his scary size.
"Go away," Boris grumbled, but his voice cracked.
Lily noticed something poking from Boris's fur — a baseball, old and scuffed. "Is that...?" she whispered.
Boris's eyes widened. "I found it. But I don't know how to play. I've never had friends."
Marmalade trotted over and rubbed against the bear's enormous leg, purring so brightly that Boris's fur sparkled.
"I'll teach you!" Lily cried. "Everyone deserves someone to play with."
By sunset, Lily, Marmalade, Boris, and the sphinx were playing the most magical game of baseball ever. The sphinx used her riddles as pitches. When Boris hit the ball, it flew like a shooting star and dissolved into butterflies. Marmalade chased them, bouncing through the air.
"I've never been so happy," Boris beamed, giving Lily a gentle bear hug.
The sphinx smiled. "The Friendship Pool's real magic isn't the water. It's showing us that everyone needs friends — even grumpy bears."
That night, Lily walked home hand-in-paw with Boris, Marmalade riding on the bear's shoulder. And every summer after, they returned to the sphinx's pool for the most magical baseball games in the world.
