The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, especially on hot summer days. The old house had secrets everywhere—hidden pathways, flower mazes, and best of all, the mysterious overgrown corner behind the palm trees.

That Tuesday, Lily pushed aside the thick palm fronds and discovered something she'd never seen before. A stone sphinx crouched near a crystal-clear pool, its eyes closed as if sleeping. The water sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight.

"Hello?" Lily whispered.

The sphinx's eyes opened slowly. They were kind and wise, like her grandmother's but much, much older.

"Hello, young explorer," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I've been waiting for someone pure of heart to find my secret pool."

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things." The sphinx smiled. "This pool grants one wish each summer to those who prove themselves worthy. But first, you must solve my riddle."

Lily nodded eagerly. She loved riddles!

"I have cities but no houses. I have mountains but no trees. I have water but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She looked around at the garden, at the palm trees waving in the breeze, at the pool reflecting the sky. Suddenly, she gasped.

"A map!"

"Correct!" The sphinx bowed its stone head. "You may make one wish."

Lily closed her eyes and thought about everything she could wish for—a new bike, endless candy, a treehouse. But then she remembered her grandmother, who had been lonely since Grandfather passed away.

"I wish for my grandmother to find a best friend who loves gardening as much as she does."

The pool began to glow. Golden light swirled across the water's surface, and the sphinx smiled warmly.

"A selfless wish is the most powerful kind," the sphinx said. "Your wish will come true."

The next morning, Mrs. Chen from down the street knocked on the door. She had just moved to town and was looking for someone to help her start a garden. By afternoon, she and Lily's grandmother were planting tomatoes together beneath the palm trees, laughing like old friends.

Lily waved to the sphinx hiding behind the leaves. Its stone eye twinkled, and she knew some magic was real—but the best magic was kindness.
