The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's overgrown garden. One afternoon, she pushed aside a curtain of ivy and discovered something she'd never seen before—a stone sphinx, half-hidden beneath roses.

The sphinx had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman, its wings tucked at its sides. Most surprising were its eyes—closed, as if sleeping.

"Hello?" Lily whispered.

The sphinx's eyes popped open. They sparkled like starlight.

"Hello, young seeker," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Cleo, guardian of the magic pool."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things." Cleo stepped aside, revealing a small pool Lily hadn't noticed. The water wasn't ordinary—it shimmered with colors like a rainbow trapped in liquid form.

"This water shows you something special," Cleo explained. "Look into it and think of a question."

Lily knelt beside the pool. She'd been worried about the spelling test tomorrow—she kept studying but the words wouldn't stick.

The pool's surface rippled. Images floated in the water like moving pictures. Lily saw herself writing spelling words while singing them aloud. The words glowed golden and stuck in her memory.

"The pool doesn't give answers," Cleo said gently. "It shows you the answers already inside you. You just needed to see them."

Lily watched the water settle, now clear as glass. "I thought I wasn't smart enough."

"Smartness isn't about knowing everything," the sphinx said. "It's about finding the way that works for YOU."

Lily reached out and touched the water. It felt warm, like a hug. "Thank you, Cleo."

"Thank yourself," the sphinx winked. "You're braver than you know."

That night, Lily sang her spelling words while writing them. Every word stuck like magic. She visited Cleo many times after that, but the sphinx taught her the most important lesson: the real magic wasn't in the pool's water, but in believing in herself.
