The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved the old stone statue in her backyard. It looked like a giant **cat** with the head of a person—her mom said it was called a **sphinx**, just like the ones in Egypt.
One hot afternoon, Lily was **running** through the garden when she noticed something strange. The stone sphinx's eyes were glowing!
"Hello there," the sphinx spoke in a voice like trickling water. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit my **pool**."
Lily gasped. A shimmering blue pool had appeared beside the statue, its surface sparkling like diamonds in the sunlight.
"Jump in," said the sphinx. "But first, you must answer my riddle: What can run but has no legs?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at the **water** flowing in a nearby stream. She thought about time, about the wind...
"Water!" she cried. "And the wind! And time!"
The sphinx smiled, and stone cracks appeared across her face as she began to move. "Correct, young friend."
Lily dipped her toes into the magical pool. The water was warm and tingled like tiny bubbles. Suddenly, she could breathe underwater!
Down she swam into an underwater kingdom where fish wore tiny crowns and seahorses played hide-and-seek among coral castles. A dolphin offered her a ride, and she zoomed through crystal caves.
"This is amazing!" Lily shouted when she surfaced.
The sphinx nodded. "Magic lives in unexpected places. But you must promise to keep my pool secret—or else it will disappear forever."
"I promise," Lily whispered.
From that day on, whenever Lily was **running** past the sphinx, she would wink—and sometimes, just sometimes, the magical **pool** would appear again.
The sphinx taught Lily that the best adventures come from keeping secrets, trusting your imagination, and being brave enough to dive into the unknown—even if it's just a stone statue in your backyard that might come alive when you least expect it.
