The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, especially the hidden corner behind the weeping willow tree. One sunny afternoon, she discovered something magical—a crystal-clear pool that shimmered like liquid diamonds, even though it wasn't there yesterday.
The pool was guarded by the most curious creature Lily had ever seen. It was a small sphinx, no bigger than a cat, with soft golden fur, tiny wings, and wise emerald eyes. Unlike the scary sphinxes from her storybooks, this one looked friendly and lonely.
"Hello," Lily whispered, reaching into her pocket. She had saved her favorite orange snack from lunch, and she thought the sphinx might be hungry.
The sphinx's eyes lit up at the sight of the orange. "Nobody has visited my pool for centuries," the sphinx said, its voice sounding like wind chimes. "I've been so lonely guarding this magical water."
Lily peeled the orange and shared segments with the sphinx. They sat together by the sparkling pool, eating the sweet fruit and talking. The sphinx told Lily stories about ancient times, and Lily shared about her school and friends.
"The pool grants one wish to anyone who shows true kindness," the sphinx said. "What would you wish for?"
Lily thought carefully. "I wish for you to have friends visit every day. Nobody should be lonely."
The sphinx's eyes filled with happy tears as the pool's water glowed golden. Suddenly, butterflies and birds appeared, dancing around the pool. Other magical creatures emerged from the garden—fairies, tiny dragons, and more sphinxes.
"Thank you for teaching me that sharing and friendship are more important than any wish," the sphinx said. "Will you visit again?"
"Every day," Lily promised, already planning to bring more oranges.
From that day on, the magical pool became Lily and her friends' special secret, where kindness and friendship created the most wonderful magic of all.
