The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, especially on hot summer days. That afternoon, she followed her golden retriever, Buster, behind the old garden shed. There, she discovered something magical—a shimmering pool of blue water she had never seen before.
But the most amazing surprise was what sat beside it. A small sphinx, only as tall as Lily's knee, with lion paws and tiny wings, watched her with kind eyes.
"Welcome, child," the sphinx spoke softly. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Wishing Pool. But first, you must answer my riddle."
Buster wagged his tail happily, thinking this was a game.
Cleo smiled. "I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. Then she looked down at the sphinx's paw.
"A map!" Lily exclaimed.
"Correct!" Cleo clapped her paws together. "You may make one wish in our magical pool."
Lily closed her eyes. She could wish for toys, or candy, or trips to faraway places. But then she felt Buster nuzzle her hand. He had been her best friend since she was a baby, always loyal and loving.
"I wish that everyone could have a friend as wonderful as Buster," she said.
The water in the pool began to glow with golden light. It swirled and sparkled, sending tiny sparkles floating into the air like fireflies.
Cleo nodded wisely. "You have chosen well. The greatest magic is not in things, but in love and friendship."
The sphinx touched the water with her paw, and ripples spread across the surface. Wherever the ripples touched, flowers suddenly bloomed around the pool's edge.
"Your wish has begun its journey," Cleo said. "Kindness spreads like ripples in water, touching everyone it meets."
As Lily and Buster walked back to the house, hand in paw, Lily understood something important. The real magic wasn't in the wishing pool at all. It was in having a heart big enough to wish for happiness for others.
That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of sphinxes and magical pools, knowing that true friends are the greatest treasure of all.
