The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily discovered the hidden pool behind the old willow tree on the last day of summer vacation. The water sparkled like diamonds, but what made her gasp was the tiny sphinx perched on a mossy rock at the pool's edge—only the size of a kitten, with emerald eyes and golden wings.
"Hello," said the sphinx. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find my secret pool."
Lily's heart fluttered. "I'm Lily. Are you... real?"
The sphinx laughed, a sound like wind chimes. "As real as your dreams. But I need your help. My friend Ferdinand—a gentle bull with magical powers—is trapped in the middle of this pool. He's been cursed to stay there until someone solves my riddle."
A bull? In a pool? Lily peered into the water. Sure enough, she could see the shape of a large bull resting at the bottom, his horns glowing softly.
"I'll help!" Lily said. "What's the riddle?"
The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "What is green and leafy, makes you strong as can be, but many children turn away and never let it near?"
Lily thought hard. Leaves... green... strong... Her nose wrinkled. "Spinach?"
"Correct!" cheered the sphinx. "You see, Ferdinand loved spinach more than anything. But the wizard who trapped him hated vegetables!"
The sphinx instructed Lily to toss some spinach leaves from the garden into the pool. As the green leaves touched the water, the bull began to rise—floating up like a bubble until he stood beside them, shaking droplets from his golden hide.
"Thank you, friend," Ferdinand said, his voice warm and rumbly. "You've freed me!"
The sphinx nodded. "You proved that being open-minded—even to things you might not like at first—is the key to true friendship."
That afternoon, Lily sat by the magical pool with her two new friends, sharing stories and wondering what other secrets summer still held. She even tried a bite of spinach—and you know what? It wasn't so bad after all.
