The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved swimming in the crystal stream behind her house. But today, the water sparkled with rainbow colors she'd never seen before.
"Come closer," whispered a rumbling voice. Lily looked up—and gasped. A sphinx sat on the mossy bank, her lion body gleaming golden in the dappled sunlight. "I've waited centuries for someone brave enough to visit my secret pool."
The sphinx's riddle was simple: "What walks on four legs, then two, then three?" Lily knew immediately—"A person! From crawling baby to standing child to walking with a cane in old age."
"Correct!" The sphinx purred with delight. "You may swim in the Enchanted Waters. But stay close when the sky turns purple."
Lily dove into water that felt like liquid laughter. She splashed and twirled until—CRACK! Purple lightning zigzagged across the sky. The ground trembled.
"Don't be afraid!" called a croaky voice. A friendly zombie shuffled from the forest—but this wasn't a scary zombie. With flowers braided into his green hair and a butterfly perched on his nose, he looked more garden guardian than ghoul. "I'm Zed! I protect the magical creatures."
A scruffy dog bounded out from behind Zed, barking happily. "This is Barnaby," Zed said. "He smelled magic and led me to you."
Suddenly, the sphinx appeared beside them. "The purple lightning means someone needs help in the Enchanted Realm!" She pointed to where the lightning had struck—where a tiny fairy lay trapped beneath a fallen branch.
Lily, Zed, and Barnaby rushed to help. Zed's surprising strength lifted the branch. Barnaby licked the fairy's cheek until she woke. Lily's gentle hands checked for injuries.
"Thank you," the fairy chimed, sprinkling golden dust on them. "You proved that kindness comes in all forms—even from those who look different."
The sphinx nodded solemnly. "That's the greatest magic of all."
As Lily walked home, Barnaby at her heels and Zed waving from the forest, she knew swimming in that stream would never be the same. She'd found something better than magic—friendship in the most unexpected places.
