The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Bolt was a small golden dog with a big problem. He was afraid of lightning.
Every time thunder rumbled across the sky, Bolt would hide under his bed, trembling. His owner, a kind girl named Mia, tried to comfort him. "Courage is like a vitamin for your heart," she said. "You need to practice being brave."
One rainy afternoon, Bolt chased a butterfly deep into the woods behind their house. Suddenly, the sky darkened. Lightning flashed—CRACK!
Bolt ran, his paws slipping on wet leaves. He tumbled down a grassy hill and landed beside something extraordinary.
A stone sphinx sat beside a shimmering pool. The creature had the body of a lion and the face of a wise old woman. Her eyes sparkled like stars.
"Welcome, little one," the sphinx spoke, her voice like gentle wind chimes. "I've been waiting for you."
"Y-you can talk?" Bolt stammered.
"I can do many things." The sphinx nodded toward the pool. "Look into the water. What do you see?"
Bolt looked. The pool reflected not just his face, but something glowing inside his chest—a tiny golden light.
"That's your courage," said the sphinx. "It's small now, but it can grow. Courage isn't about not being afraid. It's about being scared and doing the right thing anyway."
Lightning flashed again. Bolt wanted to run, but he stayed.
"I'm afraid," he admitted.
"That's okay," said the sphinx. "Even lions feel afraid. The bravest thing you can do is say it out loud."
Bolt took a deep breath. "I'm afraid of loud noises."
"And now you've faced your fear by speaking it," the sphinx said. "Your courage light just grew brighter."
Bolt looked again. The golden glow in his reflection had doubled!
"Every time you face something scary, your courage gets stronger," the sphinx explained. "Like a vitamin that builds you up."
Bolt felt something change inside. He wasn't shaking anymore.
"Thank you," he said.
"Remember," the sphinx whispered as she began to fade, "the pool is always here whenever you need a reminder of how brave you really are."
Bolt ran home through the storm. He was still a little scared of the lightning, but now he knew something important: courage wasn't something you found. It was something you practiced, one brave moment at a time.
That night, instead of hiding under the bed, Bolt curled up beside Mia as thunder rumbled outside. His courage light was shining bright, and he knew exactly where to find more whenever he needed it.
