The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house in Florida. Behind the garden, there was a hidden swimming pool that nobody used anymore. The water sparkled emerald-green in the sunlight.
One hot afternoon, Lily swam alone in the pool. Something amazing surfaced beside her with a splash! It was a small sphinx—with the body of a lion and the head of a girl—about the size of a cat. The sphinx had beautiful golden hair that flowed in the water like seaweed.
"I've been waiting for someone brave enough to swim in my pool," said the sphinx. "My name is Cleo. Would you like to see my secret?"
Lily nodded eagerly. Cleo swam to the deep end and pulled a shiny cable that Lily had never noticed before. Like magic, a door opened in the pool wall, revealing a hidden cave filled with treasure!
But the real treasure wasn't gold or jewels. The cave was filled with baskets of the sweetest, sun-ripened papayas anyone had ever seen.
"These are magic papayas," Cleo explained. "They grow from friendship seeds. Every time someone makes a true friend, a new papaya appears."
Lily's eyes widened. "Does that mean we're friends now?"
Cleo smiled. "Yes! And look—there's a new papaya growing right now!"
From that day on, Lily visited the secret pool every summer. She and Cleo would share papayas and swim until the stars came out. Lily learned that the best magic isn't gold or jewels, but the friendships we make along the way.
And whenever she missed her sphinx friend, Lily would remember Cleo's golden hair floating in the water and know that true friends are never far away in your heart.
