The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved running through the meadow behind her house, her bare feet padding softly on the warm grass. One sunny afternoon, she discovered something she'd never seen before — a crystal-blue pool hidden among the weeping willows, shimmering like liquid sapphire.
But what amazed her most was what sat beside the pool: a magnificent stone sphinx with emerald eyes that seemed to twinkle.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke, its voice gentle as a summer breeze. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit my magical pool."
Lily's eyes grew wide. "You can talk?"
"Indeed," the sphinx smiled. "This pool shows reflections of your heart's true wish. But first, you must answer my riddle."
Lily nodded bravely.
"What has feet but cannot run?" the sphinx asked.
Lily thought hard. Then she grinned. "A snail!"
"Correct!" The sphinx clapped its paws together, and suddenly — POOF! — it transformed into a fluffy brown bear with a golden crown.
"I'm actually a magical bear," the creature explained. "For 100 years, I was trapped as a sphinx until someone kind and clever came along. Thank you, Lily!"
The bear splashed into the pool, creating rainbow ripples. "Join me! The water wishes to dance with us!"
Lily jumped in too, and they spent the afternoon playing games and sharing stories. As the sun began to set, the bear dried her off with his warm fur.
"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked.
The bear pressed a small stone into her hand — a miniature sphinx carved from emerald. "Keep this, and whenever you need a friend, just hold it tight. I'll always be with you."
Lily ran home, her heart full of magic. She learned that courage and kindness can unlock the most wonderful surprises — and that true friendship can be found in the most unexpected places.
