The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily discovered the magic on the hottest day of summer. Behind her grandmother's old garden, past the twisty orange trees, lay a hidden pool she'd never seen before. Its water sparkled like someone had sprinkled diamond dust across the surface.
But the most amazing thing wasn't the pool itself. It was who sat beside it.
Perched on a flat rock was a small sphinx, no bigger than a cat, with soft golden fur and tiny wings that shimmered like rainbows. The sphinx's eyes twinkled like stars.
"You found me!" the sphinx said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "I've been waiting seven hundred years for someone brave enough to follow the butterflies."
Lily's eyes went wide. "Really?"
"Really." The sphinx fluttered her wings. "But first, you must meet my friend."
From behind a swaying palm tree emerged a bull — but not a scary one. This bull was the color of moonlight, with gentle brown eyes and a nose that twitched curiously. He wore a little crown made of tropical flowers.
"This is Moonbeam," the sphinx said. "He's magical too. He can grant one wish, but only to someone with a pure heart."
Moonbeam lowered his head and nudged Lily's hand with his velvety nose. His warmth felt like sunshine.
The sphinx leaned closer. "What would you wish for, Lily? Riches? Power? Adventures?"
Lily thought carefully. She looked at the sparkling pool, the magical sphinx, and the gentle bull who had somehow become her friend in just minutes.
"I wish..." Lily said slowly, "that I could come back tomorrow. And the next day. And that we could all be friends forever."
The sphinx gasped. Moonbeam let out a happy snort and did a little dance.
"That's the best wish I've ever heard!" the sphinx cried. "You didn't wish for things. You wished for friendship."
Moonbeam's horn began to glow — Lily hadn't noticed it before! — and swirls of magic light filled the air. The pool water bubbled and sparkled.
"Granted!" said the sphinx.
Every summer after that, Lily returned to the secret pool. She and the sphinx solved riddles, she fed Moonbeam sweet flowers, and they had wonderful adventures together.
Lily learned that magic wasn't about wishes coming true. The real magic was kindness, friendship, and opening your heart to the impossible.
Some secrets are too wonderful to keep — but some, Lily knew, were perfect just between friends.
