The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily pushed through the tall grass until she found it—the most beautiful pool she had ever seen. The water sparkled like diamonds under the warm sun, and orange flowers grew all around the edges.

But what made her gasp was what sat beside the pool.

A sphinx!

But not a scary one like in her storybooks. This sphinx had soft, golden fur and the longest, most beautiful hair she had ever seen. It flowed around her lion body like a river of sunshine.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle bells. "I've been waiting for a friend."

Lily's eyes went wide. "You want to be my friend?"

"Everyone needs a friend," the sphinx said wisely. "Even magical creatures like me. Would you like to see something special?"

She nodded so hard her curls bounced.

The sphinx reached into the orange flowers and pulled out the perfect orange—bright as a sunset, round as a ball. Then she did something amazing. She tossed the orange into the pool, and instead of sinking, it floated. And wherever it touched the water, ripples of glitter spread across the surface.

"This is a wishing pool," the sphinx whispered. "Make a wish for someone else, and it will come true."

Lily thought hard. She thought of her grandmother, who missed walking in the garden. "I wish my grandmother could dance again," she said softly.

The orange glowed golden, and the sparkles swirled into the air. That evening, Lily's grandmother called to say she had felt strong enough to dance for the first time in years.

Every summer after that, Lily visited the sphinx by the pool. They shared wishes and stories and oranges, and Lily learned that the best magic of all is kindness—especially when shared with a friend.
