The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on sunny mornings. That's when she discovered the mossy stone statue behind the rosebushes — a small sphinx with emerald eyes and gentle wings folded along its back.

"Hello there," Lily whispered, touching its paw.

To her surprise, the sphinx blinked! "Hello, young explorer," it rumbled in a voice like ancient stones rubbing together. "I've been waiting for someone kind enough to find my pool."

The sphinx spread its wings, revealing a hidden pool Lily had never noticed before. Crystal-clear water sparkled with tiny rainbow lights, and swimming in circles was the most beautiful goldfish she had ever seen — its scales shimmered like liquid sunset.

"This is Sunny," the sphinx said. "She's a very special goldfish. She guards the secret of happiness."

Lily knelt by the water. Sunny swam closer, her tail creating ripples that turned into tiny butterflies before fading away.

"I wish I could understand what she's saying," Lily sighed.

"Perhaps you can," said the sphinx. From its stone paw, it produced a single glowing orange pill. "This is no ordinary vitamin. It's a Truth-Vitamin. One bite, and you'll understand all creatures for one whole hour."

Lily's eyes widened. "Will it hurt?"

"It tastes like orange sunshine," promised the sphinx.

Lily popped it into her mouth. Yummy! Suddenly, the garden came alive with whispers. The roses were gossiping about bees. The ants were planning a picnic. And Sunny's voice rang clearest of all.

"I swim all day, spreading joy," sang the goldfish. "But I get lonely. No one ever stays long enough to be my friend."

"I'll stay!" Lily promised.

She spent the most magical hour talking with Sunny, learning about underwater castles made of pearl, and fish who sang opera. The sphinx smiled as it watched them make up stories together.

When the sun began to set, the sphinx spoke again. "The Truth-Vitamin has worn off, but you've learned something more important."

"What?" Lily asked, waving goodbye to Sunny.

"The real secret of happiness isn't magic vitamins or special powers. It's taking time to be friends with those who are lonely. Sunny's pool is magical because someone cares about her."

Lily visited the garden every day after that. She didn't need more vitamins. She had discovered something better: friendship was the most powerful magic of all.
