The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily and Max loved running through their backyard on sunny afternoons. Their legs would pump, their laughter would bubble up, and the wind would tickle their faces. One day, while running farther than usual, they discovered something magical behind the old oak tree.

A sparkling pool glowed with soft blue light, and beside it sat a small sphinx with golden fur and twinkling eyes. Unlike the fierce sphinxes from storybooks, this one smiled warmly.

"Welcome, young friends," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone to find my secret pool."

Lily and Max stopped running and approached slowly. "Who are you?" Lily asked.

"I am Aurora, guardian of this magical pool," the sphinx explained. "Once a day, it grants one wish to anyone who discovers it. But there's a catch – your wish must help someone else."

The children looked at each other with wide eyes. Their neighbor Mrs. Chen had been sad lately because her cat disappeared. Max tugged Lily's sleeve. They knew exactly what to wish for.

"We wish Mrs. Chen's cat would come home," they said together.

Aurora nodded, and the pool's blue light swirled like a tiny tornado. A warm breeze lifted their hair, and when the light faded, they heard a familiar meow.

Mrs. Chen's cat Mango trotted out from behind a bush, purring loudly.

"Thank you!" Lily and Max cheered, hugging the sphinx's golden paw.

"Remember," Aurora whispered, "the best wishes are the ones that make others happy. Now run along home – Mrs. Chen is waiting."

That afternoon, Lily and Max walked home slowly, no longer running. They had discovered something better than any race – the magic of kindness and the joy of giving. And every time they passed the old oak tree, they whispered thank you to their friend the sphinx, who taught them that the greatest wishes are the ones we make for others.
