The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard. It was full of ancient trees and hidden corners. One hot summer afternoon, she discovered something extraordinary—a glowing blue pool she had never noticed before.
The water shimmered like liquid sapphires. Lily leaned closer, and suddenly a magnificent creature rose from the water. It was a sphinx, with the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman.
"Welcome, young one," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Cleo, guardian of this magical pool. I have been waiting for someone kind enough to solve my riddle."
Lily's eyes widened with wonder. "I love riddles!"
Cleo smiled. "Here it is: I have no feet, but I always travel. I have no mouth, but I always tell stories. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. Then she gasped. "A book!"
"Correct!" Cleo cheered. Suddenly, the pool began to bubble. Up rose a zombie—a green, slightly clumsy creature with messy hair and button eyes.
Lily stepped back, but the zombie looked nervous, not scary. "H-hello," it stammered. "I'm Zara. I forgot how to have fun. Can you help me?"
The sphinx explained, "Zara was once a joyful child, but she forgot how to play. Only friendship can restore her spirit."
Lily smiled. "I can help! Let's play tag!" She tapped Zara's shoulder and ran. Zara's zombie shuffle turned into a skip, then a giggle, then full-blown laughter. With each game, Zara's green cheeks turned rosier and her button eyes sparkled.
By sunset, Zara wasn't a zombie anymore—just a happy girl named Zara.
"Thank you," Zara hugged Lily. "You reminded me that joy lives inside friendship."
Cleo nodded wisely. "Kindness is the most powerful magic of all."
That night, Lily realized something wonderful: sometimes the scariest-looking problems just need a friend to solve them.
