The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily discovered the hidden garden on a warm summer afternoon. Behind her grandmother's ancient oak tree, vines parted to reveal a stone path winding toward a small, magical pool. At its edge stood a statue of a sphinx with folded wings and closed stone eyes.
Every evening, Lily would creep back to become a spy on her own discovery. She hid behind rosebushes to watch the pool. On the third night, something magical happened.
The sphinx's eyes opened. They sparkled like captured starlight.
"Little spy," the sphinx spoke gently, "why do you hide?"
Lily stepped forward, trembling. "I didn't want to scare you away."
"Magical creatures don't scare easily," the sphinx smiled. "But I've been waiting for someone worthy of my pool's secrets."
The sphinx explained that the pool reflected not faces, but dreams. Anyone brave enough to look could see their heart's true wish.
Lily peered into the water. She didn't see herself. She saw herself surrounded by friends, laughing in a garden just like this one.
"Your wish is friendship," the sphinx said. "The magic is already working—you're talking to me."
"But you're magical!" Lily protested. "I mean regular friends."
"True friends," the sphinx replied wisely, "are the most magical of all. But first, you must stop spying from the bushes and start inviting people in."
The next morning, Lily brought her grandmother to the garden. To her surprise, her grandmother's eyes lit up.
"I played here as a child," she whispered. "The sphinx was my friend too."
The sphinx winked at Lily. Sometimes, the best magic is simply sharing a secret with someone special.
From that day on, Lily was never a spy again. She became the keeper of the sphinx's pool, bringing friends to share its magic. And she learned that the greatest wonder isn't found in secrets—it's found in sharing them.
