The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily discovered the hidden path behind her grandmother's garden on the hottest day of summer. The dirt trail wound through ancient trees until it opened into a magical clearing she'd never seen before.
In the center sparkled the most beautiful swimming pool she could imagine—water as blue as a summer sky, surrounded by swaying palm trees that whispered secrets in the breeze. But what made Lily gasp was what lay beside the pool.
Resting on a flat rock was a creature from storybooks—a sphinx! But this sphinx wasn't made of stone. She had soft golden fur, wise amber eyes, and magnificent wings folded against her sides.
"I've been waiting for you," the sphinx said gently. "I'm Cleo, and I've been stuck here for three hundred years."
Lily's eyes went wide. "Stuck? Why?"
Cleo sighed, and Lily noticed her front paw was swollen. "I hurt my paw. Without being able to move, I can't reach the healing waters of this pool. The magic only works if I'm swimming in it."
The pool water lapped against the shore, just inches away from where Cleo lay.
"But I can't swim while my paw hurts like this," Cleo continued sadly. "And the magic water can only help me if I'm already in it. It's a terrible puzzle."
Lily looked at the sphinx's swollen paw, then at the sparkling water, then back at Cleo's amber eyes filled with loneliness.
"I could help!" Lily said without thinking. "I could help you into the pool."
"You would do that for a stranger?" Cleo asked, tilting her head.
"You're not a stranger anymore. You told me your name!" Lily grinned.
Together they managed to get Cleo into the cool blue water. The moment the sphinx began swimming, her paw started to heal. As she glided through the water, Lily stretched out her hand, and Cleo let the girl scratch behind her ears just like a cat.
"You're very brave," Cleo said. "And very kind. Most people run away when they see a sphinx."
"Why would they? You're beautiful!"
Cleo's eyes sparkled. "And you're the first friend I've made in three hundred years. Thank you for seeing with your heart, not just your eyes."
Lily visited Cleo every day that summer. They swam together, ate coconuts from the palm trees, and Cleo told Lily stories from ancient times. And sometimes, when Lily lay in the sphinx's warm paw, she understood the best secret of all: true friends help each other, no matter how different they might seem.
