The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved being a spy. Every Saturday, she put on her spy hat (really just her dad's old fedora) and snuck around the neighborhood with her magnifying glass, looking for mysteries.

One hot afternoon, Lily followed a trail of orange petals behind the old oak tree in Mrs. Higgins' yard. There, glimmering in the dappled sunlight, was a pool she had never seen before. The water glowed soft orange, like sunset captured in liquid form.

"Who goes there?" a rumbly voice echoed.

Lily froze. From behind an orange bush emerged a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. A sphinx!

"I'm Lily," she squeaked. "I'm a spy. I was just—"

"Curious?" the sphinx smiled. "That is good. I am Seraphina, guardian of the Wishing Pool. But I haven't had visitors in many years."

"This is a Wishing Pool?" Lily's eyes widened.

"Indeed," Seraphina nodded. "But beware, young spy. This pool shows you not what you want, but what you need."

Lily leaned over the orange water. At first, she saw herself—older, with a spy badge and adventures around the world. But then the image changed. She saw herself reading to her little brother, helping her mom cook, sharing her toys with the new girl at school who always sat alone.

"I thought I wanted to be a famous spy," Lily whispered. "But I think... I needed to remember that the best adventures are the ones we share."

Seraphina's golden eyes sparkled. "You have solved the riddle, little one. True happiness is never lonely."

The sphinx pressed something into Lily's palm—a small orange crystal that felt warm, like a tiny sun. "Whenever you forget, hold this and remember."

When Lily looked up, Seraphina and the pool had vanished. Only the orange petals remained. But in her hand, the crystal still glowed.

That afternoon, Lily went home and read to her brother. She invited the new girl from school to play tomorrow. And she kept her spy hat, because sometimes the best discoveries aren't magical pools—they're the friends we make along the way.
